The comedy that insiped us for the choice of our B&B name is the one you can find in E. Scarpetta(1853-1925), one of the most famous Naples playwright and natural father of the most celebrated Eduardo De Filippo (1900-1984).
The work has had in the years lots of performances and adaptations. The luckiest and funniest version is however the film by Mario Mattioli in 1954, the protagonist being the great Totò (Antonio De Curtis, 1898-1967) in the role of Felice Sciosciammocca (also see “Il Medico dei pazzi” and “Un turco napoletano”), a poor scrivener whose family lives together with the one of the photographer Pasquale, poor in the same way.
This situation suddenly changes when a young noble, marquis Eugenio, hires the two families pretending to be his noble relatives during the engagement dinner at the house of his beloved Miss Gemma (Sofia Loren), , so that they can consent to the marriage that his real family would have denied because of Gemma’s poor origins.
The plot is based on misunderstandings, typical of Scarpetta’s farce, and is enriched by a great conic cast (Totò, Enzo Turco, Carlo Croccolo, Sofia Loren…). Famous is the scene when the poor pounce on the food offered by the marquis, after starving days, exalting the good and fragrant maccheroni with tomato sauce.
